Where and when
12 Pegleg Road, Eaglehawk. Tuesdays only, 2–6pm. Pull in any time in that window — no need to call ahead. This is a farm-gate collection point, so please stick to the hours above.
Buying on the day — no subscription? No problem. Fresh dozens are available for casual purchase during collection hours. $8 a dozen, cash or card.
Not just "free-range." Actually pasture-raised.
Every carton of supermarket "free-range" eggs is produced under the same legal ceiling: up to 10,000 hens per hectare — one hen per square metre. That's the maximum allowed under Australia's national Free Range Egg Labelling standard.
Independent groups like CHOICE and the RSPCA say genuine free-range should mean no more than 1,500 hens per hectare, based on the CSIRO's Model Code of Practice.
Our hens run at roughly 165 birds per hectare — about 9 times below the CSIRO benchmark, and roughly 60 times below the legal maximum most supermarket "free-range" eggs are produced under.
The numbers, side by side

Checked against the major supermarkets' Bendigo pricing and online ranges, a dozen eggs currently costs: Barn-laid roughly $5.70–$6.90. Free-range roughly $6.20–$9.75. Organic/pasture-raised roughly $8.50–$15.70 — and genuinely hard to find; Bendigo's major supermarkets had no pasture-raised eggs in stock at all.
At $8 a dozen, we land right in the middle of standard Bendigo supermarket free-range pricing — while our hens have roughly 60 times more space than the free-range legal maximum, and pasture-raised eggs are barely stocked locally at any price.
Why pasture-raised eggs are simply a better egg
Taste: Hens that spend their days foraging on pasture lay eggs with a richer, more pronounced flavour and firmer whites than shelf eggs from grain-only hens.
Colour: Crack one open and the difference is obvious — a deep, vivid orange yolk instead of pale yellow, from carotenoids the hens pick up foraging on fresh pasture.
Nutrition: A peer-reviewed study found pasture-raised eggs carry roughly 3 times the omega-3 fatty acids and twice the carotenoid content of cage-free eggs. A widely cited Penn State study found roughly twice the vitamin E, 2.5 times the omega-3s, and 38% more vitamin A than eggs from caged hens.
None of this comes from a label. It comes from 165 hens per hectare, moved regularly onto fresh pasture.
