More than just free-range
Many egg cartons use similar language, but how birds are managed can vary considerably.
At Hops, Stock & Barrel, our hens live in low density flocks, in mobile sheds that are regularly moved across dress pasture. Rather than remaining on the same ground year round, our birds have continual access to new areas to forage while previously grazed pasture is given time to recover.
We believe healthier birds, healthier pasture and healthier soils work together to produce better eggs.

Why we use mobile sheds
Traditional poultry sheds are designed around fixed infrastructure.
Our sheds are designed around the paddock.
By moving our sheds regularly we can:
-
give birds fresh pasture
-
reduce ground pressure and soil compaction
-
distribute manuare naturally
-
improve pasture health
-
reduce nutrient concentration in one location
-
encourage highly active pastures for carbon down draw, insect populations and protein level, thereby reducing our feed input requirements.
It's a simple idea, but one that benefits both birds and the land.

Low Density Management
We deliberately avoid pushing stocking densities to the limit.
Giving birds more space allows them to:
-
forage naturally
-
spread throughout the paddock
-
avoid excessive competition
-
remain active
-
press normal behaviours.
Theis isn't about making dramatic claims - its about managing our flock in a way that aligns with how we believe poultry should be raised.
